A recent survey showed that the top fear of Americans is having their bank account, credit card, or other vital personal information stolen from their computers.
The survey, conducted by independent research firm Luntz, Maslansky Strategic Research on behalf of Kindsight, also recorded the following numbers:
- 29% identified Trojan viruses that hijack their computers for the distribution of spam, infections, or child pornography to other computers and users as one of their top two concerns;
- 27% identified phishing, which further reinforces identity theft as one of their top two concerns;
- 26% were most concerned with having their computer’s performance compromised by viruses;
- 15% were concerned about viruses corrupting their personal photos, videos and other memories.
This survey connects well with one iKeepSafe’s three main risks associated with all connected technology: inappropriate contact. In other words, we need to teach people to recognize and protect themselves against contact with cyber-bullies, hackers, phishers, and predators. Aside from having up-to-date anti-virus software and a firewall, it is important to remember that those we associate with online aren’t always who they say they are. Always be cautious because, although we may be chatting with friends, there is often no way to confirm who is on the other end of the user name.
