Internet Crime on the Rise

by James Gunter on June 26, 2009

The Internet Crime Complaint Center recently released a report stating that cyber crime, so far this year, shows an increase in crime over 2008. In addition, the report states that between February and March of 2009, internet crime increased by 50%.

In response, law enforcement agencies across the US have increased efforts to track down and prosecute these criminals, but the first line of defense is you. As always, you can protect yourself from internet scams and identity theft by being vigilant about which sites you give personal information to. It’s never a good idea to give out personal information to individuals through email or instant message. As well, if a popup appears telling you that a virus scan has been performed on your computer and you need to install some anti-virus software you’ve never heard of, don’t click the link. Be smart, be vigilant, and keep your information to yourself.
